Essence and Realism: TOMB RAIDER

blog-1501 August 2, 2025

Adventure is not one of the greatest things that exists in the world. When we find something new, surprising, capturing our attention and breath – combining two opposing emotions: joy and fear – leading us into complete ecstasy.
Many books, films and games have been created under the heading of adventure. They motivated us with the Indiana Jones hat getting into incredible places and deadly traps. Either amazing facts from the books of Baron Munchausen to the center of the earth or taking off from a cannon while remaining alive. And of course, in games with Nathan Drake, his smile and tireless running, speed and shooting.

But if we talk about games, which heroine has always given us adventures, but also shown us who the real sex symbol of the gaming industry is, both on computers and on game consoles. Of course, it did not bypass television screens in the role of Angelina Jolly – stunning Lara Croft, which only with its presence fills the room with pheromones of its beauty and fills the hourglass with its forms.

But not so long ago Lara Croft changed her style a little and became younger, less sexy, but still without losing her charm. The developers have released a trilogy of games Tomb Raider, Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. By making the heroine more like Robinson Crusoe – constantly trying to survive, breaking something for herself, making her way through crowds of corpses – balancing on the brink of morality.
But it’s not for nothing that they call her – tomb Raider. And today we will analyze the first part of the new trilogy of games and look at new adventures in which Croft and Let’s check all these amazing islands, tombs and mysterious places for realism.

And let’s start with the first game, in which we sail to the island of Yamatai, get caught in a storm and try to survive in this place. On the island we meet with a certain cult that worships the dead Empress Himiko, who can control the weather. They also made a good movie about this game with Alicia Vikander, which largely repeats the main events in the game.
Well, what about realism, and here everything is very close. Yamatai (Japanese). Yamatai Koku (邪馬台国) is a Japanese early state entity that is mentioned in Chinese historical chronicles. And yes, as in the game, the empress was called Pimiko or Himiko and she was personified with the goddess Amaterasu – the goddess of the sun, as in the game.

AND WHERE IS THIS YAMATAI?

There are two theories regarding the location of Yamatai. Proponents of the first claim that Yamatai was located in the modern region Kinky and developed into Yamato in the IV-V centuries. Their opponents place Yamatai on Kyushu island, referring to the excavations of the Yoshinogari site. In addition to these two traditional theories, there are hypotheses that localize Yamatai to islands of Okinawa and even on Hawaii.
But in the game we find ourselves in the second Bermuda triangle, called devil’s sea, although scientists have not said anything about the connection of this region with Yamatai, although ships really disappear there and there are strong storms. Plus there is evidence that UFOs and ghosts were seen there.

AND THE EMPRESS WAS DISAPPEARING?

But there also lies the tomb of the great queen? Japanese archaeologists have found the queen’s burial. They are convinced that they have discovered the burial place of the legendary Queen Himiko, who ruled the ancient kingdom of Yamatai in the 3rd century AD.uh. However, scientists are unlikely to be able to obtain definitive evidence of their discovery, since the imperial palace has prohibited further excavations at the site of the queen’s supposed grave in the city Sakurai, located near the ancient capital Nara in central Japan on the island of Honshu, unfortunately.

AND OF COURSE HIMIKO’S SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES.

Well, was Himiko as scary and powerful as in the game, let’s delve into legends and historical documents. The only reliable written references to Himiko are the lines of the Chinese historical work "Records of the Three Kingdoms". This source, compiled around 297, describes the social organization of the inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago – the "people of the wa" ("people of the dwarfs"), as well as the reign of the "female sovereign" Himiko. The latter appears in Chinese sources as the ruler-shaman of the country of Yamatai and the mistress of the dependent regions of Japan, who rules “by deceiving the people with spells”.
According to legend, after Himiko died, more than 1,000 slave servants were killed and buried around her grave. Which come to life at the end of the game and protect it, in the game itself.

The name Himiko in translation, as experts say, means “Priestess of the Sun” or “Solar Shaman”. The Chinese claimed that Himiko had miraculous powers because she followed the teachings of the “Way of Demons.”. The Chinese called Japanese gods "demons".
The lifestyle of this royal person corresponded to her name: she remained celibate and did not accept men. In order to reinforce this reputation, the queen maintained a retinue of thousands of slave girls.
Days and nights Himiko shamanized and indulged in mysterious rituals, communicating with the gods. She communicated the will of the gods to her younger brother, who was entrusted with the burden of managing the secular affairs of the state. The brother was the only man who was allowed to enter the queen’s chambers. So nothing is exact, and the details of the rituals are not known. Although there is information that she could stupefy other people during negotiations and, as the mistress of the Sun, she controlled the weather just like in a game.

So, according to legend, she really had some special magical abilities, who knows. But it has not yet been officially found where this state of Yamatai was located. And while the authorities will not allow excavations to be carried out on the supposed tomb of Himiko, developers, artists and writers are free to interpret the legend of the great shaman Queen Pimiko or Himiko.
